Ambonnay lies on the south-eastern flank of the Montagne de Reims, between Bouzy and Condé-sur-Marne, in the Marne department. The village is one of the seventeen Grand Cru communes of Champagne.
- Vineyards: the slopes face south and south-east on a chalk subsoil. Pinot Noir dominates, complemented by Chardonnay.
- Character: the wines are known for their fullness, ripe red fruit and vinosity, with a chalky freshness that allows them to age for a long time.
- Producers: the village has many récoltants-manipulants, including Egly-Ouriet, Marguet, Eric Rodez, Paul Déthune, Billiot and Soutiran.
- Notable: Krug sources the Pinot Noir for its Clos d'Ambonnay from a small walled plot in Ambonnay.
