Champagne Saint-Réol is a cooperative in Ambonnay (Montagne de Reims), founded in 1960 by 58 winegrowers and officially starting in 1962. The house is known as one of the few brands that sells exclusively 100% Grand Cru champagnes, coming from seven prestigious villages such as Aÿ, Avize, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Bouzy, Cramant, Oger and Ambonnay.
Vineyards and Terroir
The winegrowers supply grapes from approximately 142 hectares (sometimes mentioned as part of the larger regional supply) at altitudes of 150 to 180 metres. The soil is rich in chalk, which contributes to the elegance.
- Grape varieties: The terroir is known for Pinot Noir (84% in Ambonnay), complemented by Chardonnay.
- Harvest: The cooperative processes approximately 15,800 hectolitres of wine annually.
- Sustainability: Since 2023 there has been certification for organic pressing and winemaking, and 80% of the grape supply is certified under HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale) or VDC standards.
Working Methods and Technology
Saint-Réol combines tradition with innovation, including the first fully temperature-controlled stainless steel winery in Champagne (1981).
- Production: The grapes are pressed near the vineyards to prevent oxidation.
- Ageing: More than 2.3 million bottles age in deep cellars more than 20 metres underground.
- Partnership: The house supplies wine to major houses such as Dom Pérignon, Perrier-Jouët, Laurent-Perrier, Mumm, Deutz and Pol Roger, while only 5% of production is sold under its own Saint-Réol name (80,000-100,000 bottles/year).
- Modernisation: In 2024 a major renovation of the cellars and reception facilities followed.
Champagnes
The cuvées emphasise finesse and aromatic richness. Some examples are:
- Brut Brut & Extra Brut: Classic non-vintage blends, often dominated by Pinot Noir.
- Blanc de Noirs: Made exclusively from red grapes (Pinot Noir).
- Blanc de Blancs: Made from white grapes (Chardonnay).
- Rosé: Often a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
- Millésime: Vintage wine (e.g. 2016, 2013, 2008), sometimes with a high percentage of Pinot Noir (75%).
- Elegance: A premium line (e.g. 2013, 2012).
