Champagne Marguet is a traditional champagne house based in Ambonnay (Marne, France), founded around 1875 by Émile Marguet. Since 2005 the estate has been run by Benoît Marguet, the fifth generation, who transformed the philosophy of the house into a radical commitment to biodynamics and the expression of the terroir.
History and Philosophy
Under Benoît Marguet the estate was turned into an example of biodynamic viticulture, with the prestigious Demeter certification obtained in 2013. Marguet emphasises a holistic approach in which the wine is made "in the vineyard", not in the cellar. This results in champagnes that are Brut Nature (no added sugars) and offer a pure, unadorned expression of the soil.
Vineyards and Terroir
The estate covers just over 8 hectares of vineyard, located in the prestigious Montagne de Reims.
- Locations: Most vineyards are Grand Cru in Ambonnay and Bouzy, with small plots in Verzenay and Vrigny (Premier Cru).
- Grape varieties: Pinot Noir is the dominant variety, supplemented with Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier.
- Age: The vineyards consist mainly of old vines with an average age of 40 years, which contributes to the concentration and complexity of the grapes.
Winemaking and Biodynamics
Marguet takes an ecological and nature-conscious approach without synthetic chemicals.
- Without chemicals: No herbicides or pesticides; use of phytotherapy (plant infusions) and aromatherapy (essential oils).
- Soil work: The soil is worked with draught horses (since 2010) to preserve the structure of the chalk soil and stimulate biodiversity.
- Vinification: Fermentation with indigenous yeasts, vinification by plot in old oak barrels, without filtration and without the addition of liqueur d'expédition.
- Sapience: An iconic cuvée that is vinified in amphorae and ages on the lees for a long time, known as the first biodynamic Grand Cru champagne of the region.
Champagnes
The range varies from accessible cuvées to very exclusive, limited releases.
- Shaman: A Grand Cru (Blanc de Blancs and Rosé) that shows the balance between Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
- Sapience: A prestigious Blanc de Blancs, available in the normal version and the rare Sapience Œnothèque (long ageing on the lees).
- Parcellaire Cuvées: Exclusive champagnes from specific plots such as La Grande Ruelle, Les Crayères, Le Parc and Les Saint-Rémys in Ambonnay.
- Other: Including Yuman (Premier Cru) and Coteaux Champenois (still wines) from Ambonnay and Bouzy.
