Avize lies in the heart of the Côte des Blancs, south of Épernay between Cramant and Oger, in the Marne department. The village has Grand Cru status.
The vineyards lie on the eastern slope of the Côte, on a thin topsoil over deep chalk. Chardonnay is virtually the only grape. Champagnes from Avize are regarded as taut, mineral and concentrated, with a characteristic chalky tension and great ageing potential.
- Producers: Avize is a byword among lovers of grower champagne, with names such as Jacques Selosse, Agrapart, De Sousa, Michel Gonet and Étienne Calsac. The cooperative behind the De Saint-Gall brand is based here.
- Notable: Avize is home to the Lycée viticole de la Champagne, the region's viticulture school.
