Champagne Le Brun Servenay is a family-run business based in Avize, a Grand Cru village in the heart of the Côte des Blancs. The house combines centuries-old traditions with modern precision to produce champagnes known for their minerality, finesse and elegant chardonnay profile.
History and Heritage
- Foundation: The house was officially founded in 1965 through the marriage of the Le Brun (Chardonnay specialist) and Servenay (Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier specialist) families.
- Generations: The business is run by the fifth generation of winegrowers, including Gauthier Le Brun, who continues the craft of his ancestors.
- Philosophy: The name "Le Brun Servenay" symbolises the synthesis of two winegrowing traditions, in which white and black grapes are carefully blended.
Vineyards and Terroir
- Area: The estate manages approximately 7 to 8 hectares of vineyards.
- Location: The vineyards are spread over three Grand Cru municipalities: Avize, Cramant and Oger.
- Cépages: The planting consists of approximately 80% Chardonnay, with the rest divided between Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.
- Characteristics: The argilo-calcaire soil provides pronounced minerality and freshness. Many vineyards contain vieux vignes (old vines), some of which are more than 80 years old.
Winemaking and Philosophy
- No Malolactic Fermentation: A distinctive choice of the house is not carrying out malolactic fermentation. This preserves the natural freshness, acidity and minerality of the Chardonnay.
- Low Dosage: The champagnes are low in dosage (often extra brut), resulting in a dry, purist and terroir-true profile.
- Sustainability: The estate practises cultivated (raisonnée) farming, minimises the use of pesticides and has used grass cover on the soil since 2004 for stability.
- Ageing: The champagnes age for at least 3 years on the lees, with longer ageing periods for millésime and prestige cuvées.
Range of Champagnes
The house produces approximately 40,000 bottles a year and offers an extensive range, including:
- Cuvée Odalie: The entry-level blend, a tribute to the merger of the two families.
- Cuvée Mélodie en C.: A Blanc de Blancs, often without malolactic fermentation.
- Cuvée Juste Rosé: A rosé with a high percentage of Chardonnay (90%) from old vineyards.
- Exhilarante: A millésime (vintage) cuvée, often made from old vines and known for its complexity.
- X.B. 2.5 & 3.2: Prestige cuvées, including a Blanc de Blancs and a Rosé Ultime, both with very low dosage.
- Chardonnay Vieilles Vignes: A 100% Chardonnay from vineyards more than 80 years old.
