Champagne Petit & Bajan is a family business in Avize, founded in 2008 by Richard Petit and Véronique Bajan. The name is a corruption of their surnames and refers to their background: Richard comes from Avize (Côte des Blancs, known for Chardonnay) and Véronique from Verzenay (Montagne de Reims, known for Pinot Noir). Both come from winegrowing families and wanted to realise the potential of their heritage.
History
- Richard and Véronique met in 1992 and married five years later.
- Richard started with a small plot of 11 ares. In 2011 Véronique added more than three hectares of Grand Cru.
- On 31 December 2008 they officially decided to produce their own champagne, after a series of tastings that strengthened their confidence in the quality of their terroirs.
Vineyards
- The estate farms approximately 3 to 3.5 hectares of vineyards, located exclusively in Grand Cru areas.
- The vineyards are divided between Avize (Chardonnay) and Verzenay (Pinot Noir), with also a few plots in Cramant and Oger.
- The soil in Avize is chalky, which contributes to the freshness and minerality of the Chardonnay. Verzenay provides structure and depth through Pinot Noir.
Approach
- The viticulture is carried out according to a balanced/sustainable approach with respect for the soil.
- The harvest is manual to guarantee the quality of the grapes.
- In the cellar the aim is precision and expression of the terroir, with long ageing on the lees (20 to 36 months, depending on the cuvée).
- The champagnes are generally dosed with a low sugar content (e.g. 3 g/l), resulting in a pure, pointed style.
Champagnes
The house style is elegant, pure and focused on terroir expression. The main cuvées are:
- Ambrosie: The house cuvée (Blanc de Blancs/Noirs mix) with 70% Chardonnay (Avize) and 30% Pinot Noir (Verzenay). Ages 30 months, dosage 3 g/l.
- Nuit Blanche: A Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru of 100% Chardonnay from Avize. Emphasises freshness and chalky minerality. Ages 36 months, dosage 3 g/l.
- Obsidienne: A Blanc de Noirs Grand Cru of 100% Pinot Noir from Verzenay. Offers structure, vinosity and a fresh, iodine-like finish. Ages 36 months, dosage 3 g/l.
- Nymphéa: A Rosé Grand Cru. Often a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, known for its fruity profile (strawberries, raspberries) and freshness.
