History: Champagne Veuve J. Lanaud was founded in 1919 by Henry-Léopold Tabourin, who named the house after his mother, the widow Marie-Joséphine Lanaud. In 1987 the name and the symbol (the eagle) were taken over by the Gauthier family, who lead production with their sons Edouard and Jonathan, who have run SAS Gauthier since 2008.
Vineyards and Working Methods: The Gauthier family manages 12 hectares of vineyards spread over 17 communes in the Côte des Blancs and surroundings. They work according to biodynamic principles (officially organically certified since 2022) and use traditional methods such as ploughing and minimal intervention. The cellars date from the 19th century and are partly hewn out of the chalk rock.
Champagnes: The house produces a wide range of champagnes, in particular Blanc de Blancs (100% Chardonnay). Well-known cuvées are:
- Cuvée Réserve Brut: 66% Chardonnay, 17% Pinot Noir, 17% Pinot Meunier.
- Cuvée Carte Noire Brut Nature: 60% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir.
- Cuvée Marie Joséphine: A prestige cuvée with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, aged in oak barrels.
- Cuvée des Prêtrosses: A grand cru blanc de blancs.
Visitors can visit the production centre, the old cellars and the vinotheque at 3 place Léon Bourgeois, 51190 Avize.
