Champagne Lancelot & Fils is a récoltant manipulant based in Avize (Côte des Blancs), run by Hubert Lancelot. The history of the house goes back to the 1930s, when great-grandfather Jean Lancelot, originally an itinerant distiller, began selling champagne. The second generation, grandfather Daniel Lancelot, built a large cellar in Cramant in the 1960s, while father Claude Lancelot founded the business in Avize in 1981 under the names Champagne Claude Lancelot and Champagne Lancelot Fils. After Claude's death in 2012, Hubert took the lead and in 2015 consolidated the activities under the brand name Lancelot Fils.
The vineyards cover 5.6 hectares spread over eight different terroirs. Although the house is in Avize, the Chardonnay grapes (the majority) come from the Grand Crus Cramant, Oiry and Chouilly, as well as the 1er Cru Villeneuve, and sites near Épernay and Hautvillers. The Pinot Noir is grown in Celles-sur-Ource (Aube). The chalky soil type gives the wines exceptional minerality.
Hubert Lancelot follows a natural style of vinification and a precision viticultural approach, supported by HVE certification (since 2017) and Viticulture Durable en Champagne (since 2021). A 4,000 kg pneumatic press and a cooling unit are used to preserve aromas; for the parcel cuvées, no malolactic fermentation is carried out and they are not filtered. The champagnes age in a traditional former cellar dug into white chalk.
Some notable champagnes of the house are:
- Cuvée Fer de Lance: A Blanc de Blancs of 100% Chardonnay, based on a perpetual reserve (blend of the current year and the previous year), characterised by fruity, mineral and fine notes.
- Cramant "Le Gros Mont": A 100% Chardonnay from a single plot in Cramant, produced by hand to emphasise the terroir.
- The house also produces a traditional ratafia, a sweet liqueur wine typical of Champagne.
Visitors can visit the estate at 30 rue Ernest Vallé, 51190 Avize for demonstrations and tastings, by appointment only. The contact details are reachable by telephone at +33 6 77 75 91 31 or by e-mail at [email protected].
