Louis Massing is a family house in Avize, a grand cru village in the Côte des Blancs where the family comes from. Estelle, Jean-Bernard and their son Julien present their champagnes in the manner of a gastronomic house, with cuvée names such as «Façon Brut» and «Façon Solera». Jean-Bernard, who comes from industrial design, runs the business; Julien gained experience in various French wine regions.
Vineyards The heart of the vineyard is in Avize, on chalk with a westerly exposure, planted with Chardonnay. Around it, the house sources grapes from villages including Oger, Cramant, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and Villeneuve. In Avize the family distinguishes three zones, «le terroir», «la plaine» and «la côte», each giving very different wines.
Method The cellar has 15 barrels and 31 temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. Each cuvée receives a house dosage liqueur, and the blends are adjusted every year.
