Vertus is a small town in the Marne department (51), on the southern side of the Côte des Blancs, south of Épernay. It is the largest wine commune of the Côte des Blancs.
- Cru: Vertus has Premier Cru status.
- Vineyards: the vineyards lie on chalk and are planted predominantly with chardonnay. Unusual for the Côte des Blancs is the proportion of pinot noir; Vertus was once known for its red wine.
- Character: chardonnay from Vertus is somewhat riper and rounder than that from the northern Grand Cru villages, with the freshness of the chalk.
- Producers: Vertus is home to the house of Duval-Leroy and to leading vignerons such as Larmandier-Bernier and Veuve Fourny & Fils. Those working here also include Charles Pougeoise, Colin, Doyard, Doyard-Mahé, Michel Rogué, Paul Goerg and René Rutat.
The town is known for its springs and the church of Saint-Martin.
