History and Ownership Champagne Barons de Rothschild is a prestigious player in Champagne, founded in 2005 and based in Vertus (Côte des Blancs) with its head office in Reims. The house is a unique collaboration between the three branches of the famous Rothschild family: Château Mouton Rothschild, Château Lafite Rothschild and Château Clarke. Production initially took place in collaboration with the producer Goutte d'Or, but in 2007 the house took over the historic Maison Prieur in Vertus, which was completely renovated in 2024.
Vineyards and Terroir The house has a limited network of growers and itself owns more than 85 hectares of vineyard (including the 1-hectare Clos Prieur). The grapes come exclusively from Grand Cru and the best Premier Cru municipalities, mainly in the Côte des Blancs (Avize, Cramant, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger) and the Montagne de Reims (Ambonnay, Verzenay). Chardonnay is the dominant grape (50-70% of the blend), which gives the champagnes their characteristic freshness and finesse.
Approach and Style Barons de Rothschild takes a small-scale, high-quality approach with a maximum production of up to 600,000 bottles per year. The wines undergo long ageing on the lees of at least four years (sometimes longer for prestige cuvées), which contributes to complexity and creaminess. A low dosage (0-6 g/l) is used to preserve the pure fruit expression, and approximately 43% reserve wines are added for consistency. The style is described as elegant, refined and modern.
Champagnes and Cuvées The range includes various cuvées, all with a strong emphasis on Chardonnay:
- Concordia Brut: A refined blend based on a majority of Chardonnay.
- Blanc de Blancs: The house's signature cuvée, made from 100% Chardonnay from prestigious grand cru villages.
- Rosé: Made from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, known for its rich fruit notes.
- Rare Collection: Prestigious vintage cuvées (e.g. Blanc de Blancs 2013) with small production volumes and careful selection.
- Triptyque: A millésimé champagne often presented in an elegant wooden box.
