History The Larmandier and Bernier families have been involved in winegrowing in the Côte des Blancs since the French Revolution. Jules Larmandier was already supplying prestigious Parisian restaurants at the beginning of the 20th century. The houses were officially merged into Larmandier-Bernier in 1971 by Philippe Larmandier and Elisabeth Bernier. Since the 1990s the estate has been run by Pierre and Sophie Larmandier, who radically changed its philosophy.
Vineyards and Terroir The estate manages 16 to 18 hectares of vineyards in Vertus (Premier Cru) and the Grand Crus Cramant, Avize, Oger and Chouilly. The soil consists mainly of chalk, which contributes to the minerality and elegance of the wines. The grape varieties are 85% Chardonnay and 15% Pinot Noir (supplemented with Pinot Gris in some sources). The average age of the vines is 35 to 45 years.
Approach and Philosophy Larmandier-Bernier is a pioneer in biodynamic viticulture (since 1999) and produces exclusively organic champagnes. Herbicides, pesticides and external additives are completely avoided. Vinification is carried out with indigenous yeasts and the wines are aged in wooden barrels and foudres, alongside stainless steel tanks. The champagnes are almost always disgorged by hand and have an extremely low dosage, often 0 g/l (Brut Nature) or very low (Extra Brut), to preserve the pure expression of the terroir.
