Duval-Leroy is a historic, family-run champagne house, founded in 1859 in Vertus (Côte des Blancs), and is one of the largest independent producers in this sub-region. The house is currently run by the sixth generation, led by Carol Duval-Leroy and her sons Julien, Charles and Louis, who have positioned the company internationally since 1991.
History and ownership The merger arose from the collaboration between wine merchant Armand Edouard Leroy and vigneron Jules Duval, a union that was strengthened by marriages between the two families. After periods of war and transformation, Carol Duval-Leroy took the helm in 1991, which led to strong modernisation, ISO certification and the launch of prestige cuvées. The company is based at 69 avenue de Bammental, 51130 Vertus and has an annual production of about 5 million bottles.
Vineyards and grapes The estate manages roughly 200 hectares of its own vineyards, mainly located in Grand Cru and Premier Cru villages. The plantings consist mainly of Chardonnay (with an emphasis on the chalky soils of the Côte des Blancs), supplemented with Pinot Noir from the Montagne de Reims and small amounts of Pinot Meunier. This spread over top terroirs guarantees a style known for finesse, freshness and a clear Chardonnay identity.
Method and sustainability Duval-Leroy uses the méthode traditionnelle with ageing in chalk cellars ("crayères") hewn out of the rock, where bottles often rest 2 to 10 years on the lees. The house is known as a pioneer in organic viticulture and sustainability, with investments in energy-efficient installations and recycling processes. The wine style is characterised by balance, purity and a subtle integration of oak notes (as in the Clos des Bouveries).
