History The champagne house Paul Goerg was founded in 1950 by eight winegrowing families from Vertus (Collard, Faucheret, Férat, Rogué, Grégoire, Doquet, Gallois and Pougeoise), who joined forces in a cooperative structure. The name is a tribute to Paul Goerg, the mayor of Vertus at the end of the 19th century who committed himself to local champagne production; the brand name was officially launched in 1984. The families remain active in the management and emphasise a heritage of craftsmanship, sustainability and respect for nature.
Vineyards The house has a vineyard area of 120 hectares (sometimes stated as 140 ha in some sources), located in the heart of the prestigious Côte des Blancs around Vertus. All vineyards are classified Premier Cru. The grape varieties are dominated by Chardonnay (85%) and Pinot Noir (15%); Pinot Meunier is not used. The terroir is known for its fine, elegant and mineral style, with old vineyards and plot-by-plot selection.
Approach The champagnes undergo a minimum ageing of 48 months in the cellar, which contributes to their complexity and authenticity. The house uses sustainable farming practices and emphasises plot selection and old vines. The style is characterised by finesse, elegance and a mineral touch, with subtle dosages that preserve the terroir expression of Vertus. The house presents itself as one of the few wine houses in Champagne that manages the vineyards itself and controls the entire chain.
Champagnes The cuvée de prestige is the Cuvée Lady (Vintage). Important cuvées include:
- Absolu Extra Brut: A Blanc de Blancs without dosage, focused on minerality and freshness.
- Blanc de Blancs Brut: A classic, elegant Chardonnay-dominant champagne.
- Tradition Brut: An accessible blend with good value for money.
- Rosé Brut: A rosé d'assemblage.
- Millésime: Vintage champagnes such as the Vintage 2012.
The champagnes can be tasted and bought in the cellar at 30 avenue du Général Leclerc, 51130 Vertus, open Monday to Friday (09:00–12:00 and 14:00–17:30). More information is available at https://champagne-goerg.com.
