Reims, together with Épernay, is the capital of champagne, located on the Vesle on the northern edge of the Montagne de Reims (Marne department). The city itself has no cru status; its importance lies in the champagne houses and their cellars.
Beneath the city lie kilometres of cellars, partly carved out of old chalk quarries (crayères) dating from Gallo-Roman times. The Saint-Nicaise hill with its houses and cellars is included in the UNESCO World Heritage site "Coteaux, Maisons et Caves de Champagne".
- Producers: Reims is home to many of the largest houses, including Krug, Ruinart, Veuve Clicquot, Louis Roederer, Taittinger, Pommery, Charles Heidsieck, Piper-Heidsieck, G.H. Mumm, Lanson, Henriot and Bruno Paillard.
- History: for centuries the kings of France were crowned in the cathedral of Notre-Dame de Reims.
