Charles de Cazanove is a historic champagne house, founded in 1811 in Avize by Charles Gabriel de Cazanove, a descendant of master glassmakers. The name "Cazanove" (related to Casanova) is a tribute to his ancestor who brought glassblowing techniques from Venice to France. The family supplied champagne to European royal houses, including King Edward VII of the United Kingdom and the French presidents during the Third Republic. In 2004 the maison was taken over by the Famille Rapeneau, active in Champagne since 1901, which led to a renaissance and international expansion.
The champagne is currently produced in Reims, located at 8 Place de la République in a building from 1923. The house does not have traditional chalk caves, but an underground cellar. The vineyard area comprises 35 hectares of its own land, certified to the HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale) standards since 2021. The grapes come mainly from villages in the Montagne de Reims, such as Ambonnay, Bouzy, Verzenay and Chamery, where the house works with selected growers to maintain its style.
Charles de Cazanove's approach combines centuries-old traditions with innovation, with an emphasis on highlighting the terroir and the individual characteristics of the plots. The champagnes are known for their chic and décalée (offbeat) look, with a slogan that reads: "Mélodie en sous-sol" (Melody in the cellar). The house has shipped more than one bottle in two worldwide, with a strong focus on international markets.
Well-known cuvées of the house include:
- Cuvée Senses and Senses Rosé
- Cuvée Stradivarius (e.g. the 2009 vintage, rated 90/100)
- Cuvée Art Nouveau
- Cuvée Romance
- Cuvée Happy Holidays (special editions)
Visitors can visit the maison for tours and tastings, gaining insight into the blending methods and the ageing process on the laths.
