History The champagne house Pommery was founded in 1836 by Narcisse Greno and later taken over by Louis Alexandre Pommery. After his death in 1858 his widow, Madame Pommery, took over the business and expanded production from fewer than 100,000 to about 2 million bottles a year. In 1874 she created the first commercially successful champagne brut and had the estate built in neo-Gothic Elizabethan style. Since 2002 Pommery has been owned by Vranken-Pommery Monopole and its underground cellars are recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Vineyards and Estate The estate in Reims covers 50 hectares, of which 25 hectares are vineyards, including the enclosed Clos Pompadour. Production takes place in 18 kilometres of underground galleries, deep in Gallo-Roman chalk pits at a depth of 30 metres. These cellars offer a constant temperature of 10 degrees Celsius, ideal for the ageing of the champagnes. The grounds combine historic architecture with contemporary art exhibitions.
Approach and Champagnes Pommery is known for its focus on quality and innovation, such as the introduction of Pommery POP in small 20 cl bottles. The champagnes are produced from the three classic grape varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. Well-known cuvées include:
- Brut Royal: The basic Brut sans Année, from forty Grand Crus.
- Apanage Brut: A fresh champagne with light wood ageing in oak barrels.
- Cuvée Louise: A tribute to Madame Pommery, made from Grand Crus from Avize, Aÿ and Cramant.
- Les Clos Pompadour: An exceptional champagne from its own 25-hectare vineyard.
