Piper-Heidsieck is a renowned champagne house in Reims, founded in 1785 by Florens-Louis Heidsieck and currently owned by the Descours family through the luxury group EPI (since 2011). The name arose in 1838 when the widow of Christian Heidsieck married business partner Henri-Guillaume Piper. The house was historically supplier to forty royal courts and received B Corp certification for sustainability in July 2022.
History and ownership
- The founding by the Westphalian Florens-Louis Heidsieck led to a cuvée that was "worthy of a queen", recognised by Marie-Antoinette.
- After periods under the management of the Kunkelmann and d’Aulan families, the house was taken over in 1988 by Rémy Cointreau and later in 2011 by EPI.
- The modern headquarters, designed by architect Jacques Ferrier, has had a wine cellar with more than 200 barrels since 1995.
Vineyards and sourcing
- The own estate is 65 hectares, but the maison works with 240 vignerons across more than 110 crus, mainly in the Montagne de Reims and Côte des Bar.
- The grapes are harvested by hand to guarantee optimal ripeness.
- Although all three champagne grapes are used, Pinot Noir is the house's signature grape, especially that from the Côte des Bar.
Approach and vinification
- Each vineyard is vinified separately and the champagnes undergo ageing of at least 36 months in the bottle, longer than the legal requirement.
- The current chef de cave is Émilien Boutillat (since 2018), the youngest at a major maison, who succeeded Régis Camus.
- The vinification process emphasises precision and a unique tasting protocol in which each cru is kept separate.
Champagnes and style
- Cuvée Brut: A classic, fresh and elegant blend of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay.
- Rosé Sauvage: A fruity, intense rosé with 50% Pinot Noir (partly as red wine).
- Essentiel: A range of precise, evolved champagnes, including a Blanc de Blancs (100% Chardonnay) and Extra Brut.
- Riviera: A young, spontaneous style designed for refreshment, often served with ice and citrus.
- Vintage and Hors-Série: Limited editions such as the Cuvée Rare and vintages (e.g. 2012, 2014, 2018) show the depth of the house.
