Vranken is a champagne house in Reims that was founded in 1979 by the Belgian Paul-François Vranken, who popularised the brand by being the first to bring champagne into supermarkets. Since December 2024 his wife Nathalie Vranken has led the house, which is part of the listed group Vranken-Pommery Monopole (which also includes Pommery, Heidsieck & Co Monopole and Charles Lafitte). The house style is characterised by light, fruity champagnes without the addition of cognac, an innovation that was already deployed in the 1970s.
Vineyards and Working Methods Vranken is one of the few houses that produces a large part of the grapes it needs itself, with vineyards in the Sézannais and elsewhere in the region. The grape varieties are mainly Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. The malolactic fermentation takes place in the spring after the harvest, after which the wine is blended with approximately 20% reserve wine. The remuage (riddling) is done on gyropalettes, which reduces the process from 40 days to only four days. The estate holds the Viticulture Durable en Champagne and Haute Valeur Environnementale labels.
Champagnes and Location The range varies from accessible cuvées to prestigious selections. Well-known products are:
- Brut Nature and Brut Nature Rosé: without dosage, focused on terroir.
- La Parisienne: a fruity brut (e.g. 89/100 points).
- Cuvée Demoiselle and Cuvée Diamant: the prestige cuvées, with Demoiselle named after the Château des Castaignes.
Visitors can visit the house at 5 Place du Général Gouraud in Reims. The location combines the historic Pommery cellars (18 km underground, UNESCO World Heritage) with the Villa Demoiselle, an architectural jewel in Art Nouveau and Art Deco style.
