Heidsieck & Co Monopole is a historic champagne house founded in 1785 by the Westphalian draper Florens-Louis Heidsieck, originally based in Reims and later Épernay. Since 1996 the house has been part of the Vranken-Pommery Monopole group and is known for its robust, Pinot Noir-driven style.
History and Heritage
- The company grew into a worldwide supplier to royal courts, including those of King Louis XVI, the Tsar of Russia and the emperors of Prussia and Germany.
- A legendary moment was the discovery of 2,400 bottles of 1907 vintage from the wreck of the Swedish schooner Jönköping in 1998; after more than 80 years under seawater these turned out to be excellently drinkable.
- After the founder's death, nephews took over the business, leading to splits that ultimately resulted in today's entity Heidsieck & Co Monopole, separate from the branches that later became Piper-Heidsieck and Charles Heidsieck.
Vineyards and Winemaking
- The vineyards form part of the extensive portfolio of the Vranken-Pommery group, which owns thousands of hectares in the best areas of the Champagne region.
- The approach emphasises the use of reserve wines (2-3 years old) that can make up more than half of the blend, which provides structure, roundness and consistency of style.
- The house focuses strongly on Pinot Noir (sometimes up to 70% in the base blends), resulting in champagnes with a powerful aroma, good structure and a robust character.
Champagnes and Cuvées
The most prominent cuvées are:
- Blue Top: The standard Brut (70% Pinot Noir, 20% Chardonnay, 10% Pinot Meunier), the house's calling card.
- Blue Top Premiers Crus: A blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay from Premier Cru villages.
- Extra Dry: Same composition as Blue Top but with a lower sugar content (dosage).
- Gold Top Millésime: The prestige cuvée (e.g. 2000), often a mix of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier, aimed at complex vintages.
- Diamant Bleu: A historic and luxurious cuvée that symbolises the house's exquisite quality.
