Champagne Le Brun de Neuville is a cooperative in Bethon (Marne), founded in 1963 by 26 winegrowers who wanted to promote the Côte de Sézanne. The house is known for its focus on Chardonnay and traditional methods, under chef de cave Gilles Baltazart (since 1986) and Damien Champy.
Vineyards and Terroir
- Area: Approximately 150 hectares spread over 12 villages in the Côte de Sézanne.
- Grape varieties: The vineyards consist of 90% Chardonnay (Blanc de Blancs), supplemented with 11% Pinot Noir and 1% Pinot Meunier.
- Soil: The chalky, porous soil acts as a water reservoir, which contributes to the freshness and minerality of the wines.
- Sustainability: The cooperative practises controlled organic cultivation (agriculture raisonnée), with mechanical weed management and no herbicides.
Winemaking and Champagnes
- Élevage: A distinctive technique is the ageing of the Authentique range under cork (no capsule) for at least 4 years, which promotes micro-oxygenation and complexity.
- Autolysis: Some cuvées are kept on the yeasts for about 10 years for extra depth.
- Range:
- Blanc de Blancs Authentique: 100% Chardonnay, 4 years under cork.
- Lady de N.: Premium range, including a rosé (6 years) and a chardonnay (7 years).
- Grand Vintage: Vintage champagnes with long ageing (e.g. 6 years for the 2008).
- Rosé: Ranging from 60% Chardonnay to blends with Pinot Noir.
Visit
The house offers demonstrations and tastings (usually 3 cuvées) in a cellar with vaulted corridors, more than 19 metres underground. Visits are possible by appointment via their official website.
