Pierre Moncuit is a family business from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger (Côte des Blancs) that began growing grapes in 1889 with Alex Moncuit. His son Pierre started in 1928 with the vinification and commercialisation of his own champagnes under the brand name Pierre Moncuit. In 1977 daughter Nicole Moncuit took over technical management, followed by her brother Yves for commercialisation in 1980. In 2007 Valérie Charpentier (daughter of Nicole) joined the team, so that the fourth generation now runs the estate.
The estate manages 20 hectares of vineyards, of which 15 hectares are classified Grand Cru in and around Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. The remaining 5 hectares are in Sézanne. The vineyard area is planted exclusively with Chardonnay, with an average vine age of about 40 to 50 years. Some specific plots, such as the Vieille Vigne (Cuvée Nicole), come from 90-year-old vines. The estate works according to HVE certification (Haute Valeur Environnementale) and harvests by hand.
The vinification is characterised by purity and the avoidance of blending different years. All wines are fermented in stainless steel tanks to preserve the expression of the terroir. Malolactic fermentation is standard because of the high natural acidity. The house style avoids reserve wines; the champagnes are generally millésime (vintage) or are at the very least produced as very pure non-vintage champagnes. The average dosage is around 8 g/l.
The main champagnes include:
- Cuvée Pierre Moncuit-Delos: The basic Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru.
- Millésime: Vintage champagnes from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, available in Brut and Extra Brut.
- Cuvée Nicole Moncuit Vieille Vigne: A prestigious cuvée from 90-year-old vines in Les Chetillons.
- Hugues de Coulmet: A Blanc de Blancs made from grapes from Sézanne.
- Rosé: A Grand Cru rosé (85% Chardonnay, 15% Pinot Noir).
- Clos Vertus: Since 2016 Valérie has been developing a cuvée from a Clos in Vertus.
