History: The house is named after Pierre Legras, born in 1662 in Chouilly, a contemporary of Louis XIV and Dom Pérignon. The family has eleven generations of winegrowers; the modern brand name was founded in 2002 by Vincent Legras (eleventh generation) as a tribute to his ancestor. He was later assisted by his wife Marcelline.
Vineyards: The estate is based in Chouilly, one of the 17 Grand Cru villages in the Côte des Blancs. It owns more than 10 hectares of vineyard, of which 7 hectares are Grand Cru in Chouilly (including the vineyards Les Partelaines and Montaigu). The rest is spread over Epernay, Moussy, Vinay and Boursault. The terroir is known for excellent Chardonnay, although Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier are also grown.
Approach: The Legras family farms organically and aims for HVE3 certification (Haute Valeur Environnementale). Vinification takes place in small, temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, with malolactic fermentation systematically applied to preserve fruitiness and roundness. The champagnes are often aged for a long time; some cuvées are bottled after more than seven years.
Champagnes:
- Orior Brut: Entry-level cuvée, mainly Chardonnay (68%) from Chouilly.
- Coste Beert Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru: 100% Chardonnay, rich taste, long finish.
- Monographie Brut Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs: 100% Chardonnay from specific plots, often as Brut Nature or Brut.
- Idée de Voyage: Blanc de Blancs, sometimes vintage (e.g. 2008, 2012).
- Millésime: Vintage Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs.
Visitors can visit the estate for tours of the press, cuverie and cellar, including a tasting.
