Pierre Bertrand is a family business and récoltant-manipulant in Cumières, 2 kilometres from the abbey of Hautvillers. Pierre Bertrand decided to stop delivering his grapes to the cooperative and sold his first bottle of champagne in 1946. In 1956 he bought an estate with cellars; in 1982 his daughter Thérèse and her husband Bernard took over the business, and since 2010 grandson Bertrand has been in charge. Around 20,000 bottles are produced each year.
Vineyards The vineyards lie in Cumières, Hautvillers and Damery (facing due south) and Mardeuil (facing west), never more than three kilometres from the estate. The slopes of Cumières and Hautvillers belong to the Coteaux Historiques recognised by UNESCO in 2015.
Method The three grape varieties are pressed separately, and less cuvée juice (18 hl) is extracted than is usual. After a static débourbage of at least 12 hours comes fermentation; some cuvées undergo malolactic fermentation. The Tradition ages for at least 24 months sur lattes, the Premier Cru and the vintages for 4 years, in cellars dug two centuries ago.
