Champagne Pierre Arnould is a small, exclusive champagne house based in Verzenay, a grand cru village in the Montagne de Reims, located between the lighthouse and the windmill of the village. The house is currently run by Nathalie Arnould, daughter of Pierre Arnould, who takes her own vision to bring the character traits of their Grand Cru champagnes to the top.
History and Ownership
The origins of the business go back to 1925, when Eugène Ralle (the grandfather of the current generation) founded his own house. Twenty-three years later, around 1955, his grandson Pierre Arnould founded his own brand. In later years the brands Pierre Arnould and Eugène Ralle were merged to join forces, offering two complementary but distinct ranges. The business was officially established as EARL Pierre Arnould on 1 June 2002 and is located at 1 rue Gambetta, 51360 Verzenay.
Vineyards and Terroir
Pierre Arnould has 9 hectares of property, all located in grand cru communes, notably in Verzenay. The terroir in Verzenay is dominated by Pinot Noir, with a small amount of Chardonnay; Pinot Meunier is hardly used or planted at all. This terroir contributes to the power and finesse of the champagnes.
Approach
Nathalie Arnould opts for a minimal to no dosage (dosage zéro or faible) in her champagnes. This approach allows the character traits of the Pinot Noir to come into their own better, resulting in champagnes with a delightful fraîcheur and pronounced fruit notes. The champagnes are produced with a focus on purity and expression of the terroir.
Champagnes and Tasting Notes
The range includes various grand cru champagnes, including:
- Brut Selection Grand Cru Verzenay: Made from 75% Pinot Noir and 25% Chardonnay. Tasting note: notes of mirabelle, kiwi, green lime, caramel, praline and nuts.
- Cuvee Prestige Effrontée Grand Cru Verzenay: Made from 100% Pinot Noir from vineyards in Verzenay (based on the 2009 harvest in the context). Tasting note: fresh cocoa beans, grilled hazelnut, brioche, grilled toast and white fruit.
- Brut Rosé Grand Cru Verzenay: Made from 95% Pinot Noir and 5% Chardonnay in the dosage. Tasting note: cherries, gooseberries, madeleine cakes, brioche and strawberries.
