Champagne Henri Chauvet is a family business in Rilly-la-Montagne (Montagne de Reims) that has been producing champagne since 1900. The estate is currently managed by the fourth generation, Damien and Mathilde Chauvet, who have been the heirs of the founder Henri Chauvet since 1987.
History and Foundation
The story began when Henri Chauvet, a viticulturist and grower, was growing grafted plants around 1900 for the rebuilding of the vineyards destroyed by phylloxera. He began the first winemaking at that time. Since 1987 the business has been continued by his great-grandson Damien Chauvet and his wife Mathilde.
Vineyards and Terroir
The estate has 8.2 hectares of vineyard around Rilly-la-Montagne, a premier cru village on the edge of Reims.
- Grape varieties: The vineyards are largely planted with Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Meunier.
- Soils: The vines grow on a terroir consisting mainly of limestone and chalk.
- Cultivation: The vineyards are managed according to the principles of viticulture raisonnée.
Winemaking and Methods
The champagnes are made using the traditional méthode champenoise.
- Vinification: Winemaking takes place in oak barrels (fûts de chêne).
- Ageing: The champagnes are aged sur lattes and in the bottle.
- Style: The champagnes are known for their elegance, freshness and complex aromas, such as citrus, white fruit, herbs and mineral notes.
Champagnes and Range
Henri Chauvet produces several cuvées, including:
- Brut: An elegant blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, characterised by freshness and a subtle dosage.
- Rosé: Often 100% Pinot Noir, with a deep pink colour and fruity aromas of cherry and citrus.
- Blanc de Blancs: Made from 100% Chardonnay, with aromas of ripe apple and roasted fruit.
- Blanc de Noirs: A blend of Pinot Noir and Meunier, with a complex and intense taste.
The estate offers visits and tastings by appointment. Visitors can see the press, the cuverie, the old vaulted cellars and the packaging room. The champagnes are available through direct sales at the estate or via home delivery.
