Champagne Douard is an independent family house in La Chapelle-Monthodon, in the heart of the Vallée de la Marne, now in its third generation.
History In the 1960s grandfather Jean planted the first vines; at first the grapes went to Veuve Clicquot. Twenty years later Christian and Marie Christine Douard began selling their first bottles under the name Champagne Douard Christian, with the support of a cooperative. For about ten years the estate has had its own cuverie and makes its champagnes at home, so that the family controls the fermentations itself. Vincent Douard is the legal representative.
Vineyards The vineyards lie on clay-limestone soil and have been farmed for three years under the HVE 3 and VDC labels.
Approach Vinification is done plot by plot in stainless-steel tanks at low temperature, with malolactic fermentation on the wine rather than on the must; the champagnes age for at least four years in the cellar.
