Burtin is a champagne house in Épernay, founded in 1933 by Gaston Burtin, who started from nothing and quickly made his name thanks to strong ties with local growers. For many years he reserved his finest cuvées for a small circle of grower partners; under the Hommage à Gaston Burtin label they are now shared more widely. Since early 2024 the house has been led by Etienne Maffre.
Sourcing A close-knit group of growers supplies the grapes; the house has access to more than 100 crus, from the Côte des Blancs and the Montagne de Reims to the Vallée de la Marne and the Aube.
Methods
- No malolactic fermentation, to preserve freshness.
- A perpetual reserve (solera) is the common thread in the blends.
- A large proportion of Meunier alongside Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
Champagnes
- Brut: 35% Meunier, 35% Pinot Noir, 30% Chardonnay from 50 villages, with 25% solera wine and at least four years' ageing.
- Extra Brut and Rosé.
- Blanc de Blancs 2018: 100% Chardonnay.
- Vintage 2015: 53% Pinot Noir, 47% Chardonnay, 88% from Grands and Premiers Crus.
