Verrier & Fils is a family estate in Étoges, between Épernay and Sézanne. The Verrier family have been growers from father to son since 1860, now over five generations. The family used to sell still wines; in 1929 Raymond Verrier created the champagne brand. His son Francis joined in 1958, and in 1992 Emmanuel Verrier took over the running of the vineyard, planting more Chardonnay and modernising the facilities. Since 2009 he has managed the estate together with his wife Laurence.
Vineyards The estate has 35 plots on 5 hectares of sunny slopes in Étoges, Fèrebrianges, Beaunay and Épernay, with 57% Meunier, 34% Chardonnay and 9% Pinot Noir. The vines average 45 years old, the oldest more than 90 years; much of the vineyard comes from sélection massale. The entire vineyard is HVE certified and no herbicides or insecticides are used. On average 30,000 bottles are sold each year.
Method Harvesting is by hand and vinification takes place in stainless steel and enamelled steel tanks; the Cuvée Ismérie is partly fermented in new 205-litre oak barrels. The cellars are dug into the chalk, in a 100-metre gallery 15 metres underground.
