Champagne Quatresols-Gauthier is a family business based in Ludes (Premier Cru), near Reims, which has produced its own champagnes since 1928, although the winegrowing tradition goes back to the 17th century. The estate is run today by Régis Quatresols and his son Guillaume, who represent the third and fourth generations of the family.
History and Foundation
The Quatresols family has been active in winegrowing for centuries, but the switch to self-bottling winegrowers (récoltant-manipulant) took place in 1928. This initiative was taken under the leadership of René Quatresols during the economic crisis of the 1930s, when winegrowers could no longer sell their grapes to the merchants. By bottling champagnes themselves, they took full control of the production process. The Quatresols-Gauthier label was officially launched in 1950.
Vineyards and Terroir
The estate owns 7 hectares of vineyard (sometimes stated as 12 ha in older sources, but more recently specified as 7 ha), spread over 36 plots in 5 communes of the Montagne de Reims.
- Classification: All the vineyards are located in areas classified as Grand Cru or Premier Cru.
- Grape varieties: The grapes are hand-harvested and consist of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay.
- Soil: The vineyards lie on clay-limestone soils, ideal for the production of refined champagnes.
Working Methods and Vinification
Quatresols-Gauthier practises sustainable and integrated viticulture with care for the environment.
- Vinification: The wine is fermented in both stainless steel tanks and oak barrels. Some cuvées, such as Secrets de Chêne, are fermented entirely in oak barrels without malolactic fermentation.
- Ageing: All the champagnes rest on the lees for at least three years in the limestone cellars, but the house uses a longer ageing period than the legal requirement for greater complexity and harmony.
- Production: The house produces approximately 25,000 bottles per year.
Champagnes and Cuvées
The range includes several Premier Cru champagnes, including:
- Brut Belle Estime: A classic blend of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay with notes of fruit and flowers.
- Blanc de Blancs: Made from 100% Chardonnay, with an elegant nose of white fruit and minerality; a limited run of 2,000 bottles per year.
- Blanc de Noirs: Made from 100% Pinot Noir, known for its structure and depth.
- Secrets de Chêne: A unique cuvée fermented entirely in oak barrels, which gives a subtle woody aroma and a complex taste.
- Rosé: A rosé from black grapes with notes of undergrowth and raspberry.
