Champagne Moutaux is a family business based in Bligny (Aube), in the heart of the Côte des Bars, about 5 km from Bar-sur-Aube. The estate, run by the fifth generation (Christine and Renaud Fischer with their children), produces champagnes on 13 hectares of vineyards with clay-limestone soils on Kimmeridgian deposits.
History
The origins lie with Jean-Claude Moutaux, who in 1973 was the first to vinify his own grapes, giving rise to the Champagne Jean-Claude Moutaux label. In 1985 his son Francis joined and the name was changed to Champagne Moutaux. In 2007 Christine (Francis’ sister) and her husband Renaud took over management, joining the Terra Vitis label in 2012 and receiving HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale) certification in 2019.
Vineyards and Approach
The vineyards are spread over the communes of Bligny, Urville and Meurville. The estate follows a certified sustainable approach (Terra Vitis and HVE), and since 2015 has completely abandoned chemical weed control, working the vineyard mechanically with ground cover. The harvest is entirely by hand, and the champagnes are produced exclusively on the estate using the traditional method.
Champagnes and Cuvées
The range includes both traditional blends and single-variety champagnes:
- Réserve Brut: Jean-Claude's first cuvée, still a core product.
- An 2000 / Val de Beauregard: A prestige cuvée with at least ten years on the lees.
- Single-variety champagnes: Exclusive blanc de noirs (100% Pinot Noir) and blanc de blancs (100% Chardonnay).
- Un Brin de Nature: A 100% Pinot Meunier Brut Nature, launched in 2020 by the younger generation.
Visitors can visit the estate by appointment from Monday to Saturday (08:30–12:00 and 13:30–17:00) for tastings and tours.
