Champagne Morize Père et Fils is a family business based in Les Riceys (Aube), known for its long tradition and unique location in historic cellars.
History The Morize family has been established in Les Riceys since 1830, although the business was formally founded in 1983 (previously active in the construction of vineyard ploughs). For four generations they have been récoltants-manipulants, meaning they harvest their own grapes and turn them into wine.
Vineyards and Terroir The family owns its own vineyard of approximately 6.5 hectares in the Côte des Bar, the southernmost part of Champagne. The soil is very well suited to Pinot Noir, the dominant grape of the region. Other grape varieties cultivated are Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc.
Approach The champagnes are matured in spectacular Cistercian cellars dating from the 11th and 12th centuries. Morize is characterised by a long ageing time:
- Their champagnes remain on the lees for at least 5 to 7 years.
- Vintage champagnes can age for up to 10 years.
- Partial malolactic fermentation is often used to preserve the freshness of the wine.
Champagnes and Wines The range covers three prestigious appellations: Champagne, Rosé des Riceys and Coteaux Champenois. Important cuvées are:
- Cuvée Tradition: 100% Pinot Noir, 5 years of ageing.
- Cuvée Réserve: 85% Pinot Noir / 15% Chardonnay, 6 years of ageing.
- Cuvée Expression (Brut Nature): 100% Pinot Noir, 7 years of ageing, no added sugar.
- Rosé de Saignée: 100% Pinot Noir, 5 years of ageing, fruity and powerful.
- Rosé des Riceys: A still rosé wine from 100% Pinot Noir.
