Champagne Morel is a family estate in Les Riceys, in the south of the Côte des Bar, which has grown pinot noir for more than five generations and is known for its Rosé des Riceys. Pascal Morel took charge of the family vineyard in 1973 and brought the first champagne to market in 1987. Since 2016 Pascal, Simon and Emilie Morel have run the estate together.
Vineyards
The vines grow on slopes at around 300 metres, facing south and south-east, on Kimmeridgian clay-limestone soils. The vineyard is 90% pinot noir and 10% chardonnay; the estate buys in no grapes. All vineyards are grassed, no herbicides or insecticides are used and the estate is HVE certified.
Approach
The grapes are picked by hand and sorted in the vineyard. The wines are kept separate by plot and year and then blended, using the estate's own press, temperature-controlled winery and 18th-century cellars.
Champagnes
The range includes Brut Réserve, Pur Rosé, L'Extra (100% pinot noir from Les Riceys), Exquis, a Millésimé 2018, Soléra Histoire de Rosé and Vemoy Le Chêne, alongside Rosé des Riceys, ratafia and marc de Champagne.
