Champagne Michel Furdyna is an independent wine producer (Récoltant-Manipulant) based in Celles-sur-Ource in the Côte des Bar (Aube), founded in 1974 by Roman Furdyna and currently run by his son Michel. The estate is known for its authentic approach, the use of seven grape varieties including rare varieties, and the production of distinguished champagnes that often win prizes at competitions such as the Concours Général Agricole de Paris.
History and Family
The Furdyna family began producing champagne in 1974, with Michel Furdyna taking the lead and setting out on the path of successful medals. The current team consists of Michel Furdyna and Matthieu, who represent the next generation of winegrowers and combine tradition with modern techniques. The origins lie with Michel's Polish immigrant parents, who built up a small vineyard holding in the Aube. Since the launch of the brand in 1976 the house has collected more than 80 national and international awards.
Vineyards and Grape Varieties
The vineyards cover approximately 8 to 9.5 hectares and are spread over six municipalities in the Côte des Bar: Celles-sur-Ource, Gyé-sur-Seine, Landreville, Loches-sur-Ource, Neuville-sur-Seine and Plaines-Saint-Lange. The estate is Terra Vitis-certified and practises sustainable viticulture (viticulture raisonnée). The grape varieties are unique to the region:
- Pinot Noir (more than 80-90%): the dominant variety in the Côte des Bar.
- Chardonnay: the second most important variety.
- Pinot Blanc, Pinot Meunier, Arbane, Petit Meslier and Pinot Gris: rare or forgotten varieties that strengthen the originality of the cuvées.
Winemaking and Vinification
Michel Furdyna uses a combination of stainless steel tanks for fresh, fruity champagnes and oak barrels (from Châtillonnais and Allier) for prestige cuvées such as La Romane and Etincelles. The vinification takes place entirely on the estate, with an emphasis on respect for nature and the land. The dosage ranges from Brut Nature (0 g/l) to Demi-sec (12+ g/l), with some cuvées offered in several dosage variants.
Champagnes and Cuvées
The range comprises about ten cuvées, known for their complexity and use of old grape varieties:
- La Romane: A rare 100% Pinot Blanc (Blanc de Blancs), aged in oak barrels, in honour of the father Roman.
- La Secrète: A unique blend of six grape varieties (Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Meunier, Arbane, Petit Meslier), known for its floral and citrus aromas.
- Etincelles: A Blanc de Blancs made from four white grape varieties, also aged in oak barrels.
- Carte Blanche: A blend of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Blanc, often as Brut or Demi-sec.
- Réserve: A 100% Pinot Noir (Blanc de Noirs), available as Brut or Brut Nature.
- La Loge: A parcel cuvée from the oldest Pinot Noir vines, often as vintage Blanc de Noirs.
- La Désirée: A Blanc de Blancs with Chardonnay and a small percentage of Pinot Blanc.
- Rose Bonbon: A Demi-sec rosé.
- Prestige: A high-quality cuvée from great vintages, often 100% Pinot Noir.
Visitors can visit the estate at 13 Rue du Trot, 10110 Celles-sur-Ource, where they can arrange wine tastings and cellar visits.
