Champagne Malingre-Truchon is a family-run business based in Prouilly, in the heart of the Massif de Saint-Thierry, about 15 km west of Reims. The Malingre family has been active as winegrowers in this region for almost 400 years; champagne production was officially resumed in 1960 by Jacques Malingre. The estate is currently managed by Agnès and Etienne Malingre.
The viticulture takes place on 6 hectares divided over 32 plots, with an emphasis on respect for the soil and the environment (HVE certification). The grape varieties vary by source, but consist of a mix of Pinot Meunier (about 68% or more than two thirds), Pinot Noir (20-25%) and Chardonnay (12-34%). The soil is rich in sand, clay, limestone and chalk, characteristic of the Massif de Saint-Thierry.
The winemaking follows the traditional Champagne method. The must is pressed in a pneumatic press, fermentation takes place in stainless steel vessels, and malolactic fermentation is applied to the white cuvées. After ageing on the lees, the wine is decanted via ice disgorgement (at about -20°C). The estate is also known for its biodiversity initiative, including the planting of 800 truffle trees.
The range includes various cuvées, including:
- Brut Tradition
- Brut Millésime (e.g. vintage 2018, rated 90/100 by Gault&Millau)
- Brut Blanc de Blancs
- Brut Blanc de Noirs (also referred to as Brut Vieilles Vignes)
- Brut Rosé
- Symphonie
Visitors can visit the estate by appointment, with options for cellar visits, tastings and excursions, including half days discovering the truffle trees.
