Champagne Louis Huot is a Récoltant-Manipulant (independent winegrower) based in Saint-Martin-d'Ablois, on the southern slopes of Épernay. The house combines centuries-old traditions with modern techniques, with the motto: "Champagne is our whole life!!"
History
The origins lie in the 19th century, when the Huot family was already active as winegrowers. The brand name Louis Huot was officially launched in 1950 by Louis Huot, the great-grandfather of the current couple. In 2009 Virginie and Olivier Huot (the fourth generation) took over the estate from their relatives. They see taking over the craft as a gift and strive to sublimate it by combining ancestral values with contemporary oenology.
Vineyards and Terroir
The estate manages approximately 7 to 8 hectares of vineyard. The plots are spread over the villages of Saint-Martin-d'Ablois, Vinay, Chavot and Monthelon. The soil on these southern slopes of Épernay is ideal for the three permitted grape varieties in Champagne:
- Pinot Noir
- Pinot Meunier
- Chardonnay
Winemaking
Virginie and Olivier Huot work in a sustainable and organic manner. Although the estate is not officially certified organic, it follows strict principles of biodynamics and sustainable farming (Viticulture Durable en Champagne), an approach that has been followed for 15 years. They produce champagnes known for their freshness, elegance and charm.
Champagnes
The range varies from non-vintage (BSA) to millésime cuvées. Some distinctive champagnes are:
- Cuvée Annonciade: A silky champagne (e.g. millésime 2012) with a long finish, often a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
- Cuvée Carte Noire: A Brut consisting mainly of black grape varieties (Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier) with some Chardonnay.
- Cuvée Réserve: A complex Brut that often ages longer (up to 5 years) in the bottle.
- Grand Boisé: A white champagne combining 50% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Meunier and 20% Pinot Noir.
Visitors can visit the estate for a tour of the cellars and wine cellars, followed by a tasting.
