Champagne Louis Casters is a family-run business based in Damery (Marne), founded in 1899 by Eugène Cadel and later renamed in 1944 to its current name when his granddaughter Marguerite and son-in-law Louis Casters took over the house. The business is currently run by the fifth generation, Johan and Valérie Casters, and combines centuries-old traditions with modern technology.
History and Family
- Foundation: Eugène Cadel (1857-1932), from an old winegrowing lineage, built the champagne house at the end of the 19th century in the centre of Damery.
- Takeover: In 1921 his son-in-law René Filaine took over the business. In 1944 Marguerite Filaine and her husband Louis Casters took over, which led to the creation of the brand Louis Casters.
- Current generation: Johan Casters (grandson of Marguerite) and his wife Valérie continue to run the business, combining respect for tradition with innovation.
Vineyards and Production
- Location: The vineyards are located in the Marne Valley, in particular in the Côte des Blancs and Montagne de Reims.
- Grape variety: The vast majority of the grapes are Pinot Meunier, supplemented with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
- Wine style: The house style is characterised by not undergoing malolactic fermentation, which results in fresh, floral and fruity aromas instead of the typical creamy notes of other champagnes.
- Vinification: The grapes are gently pressed in pneumatic presses and fermented in controlled stainless steel vessels at 20-22°C for about 30 days.
- Harvest: The harvest is 100% by hand, with a planting density of about 8,000 vines per hectare.
Champagnes and Range The house offers a wide range of champagnes, including single-variety (monocépage) wines and blends:
- Traditional Cuvées:
- Cuvée Supérieure: 100% Pinot Meunier.
- Cuvée Sélection: 100% Pinot Noir.
- Cuvée Réserve: 100% Chardonnay.
- Blended wines:
- Rosé Brut: A rosé champagne.
- Cuvée Eugène: A prestigious cuvée in honour of the founder, consisting of 70% Chardonnay, 15% Pinot Meunier and 15% Pinot Noir. It ages for about 7-8 years on the lees and has a dosage of 9 g/l.
- Millésimes: Vintage champagnes such as the Millésime 2015 (100% Chardonnay Grand Cru) and Millésime 2018 (50% Chardonnay, 50% Pinot Noir).
- Specialities: The range is supplemented with Ratafia de Champagne and Vieux Marc de Champagne.
