Champagne Laval-Louïs is an independent winegrower's house in Cumières (Vallée de la Marne), founded in 1972 through the merger of the estates Louïs Philippe and Laval Marius, which have come from winegrowing families for centuries. The business, run by Florent and Régine Laval, is a récoltant manipulant (harvesting and processing its own grapes) and produces 15,000 to 20,000 bottles a year.
The vineyards cover 4.4 to 4.6 hectares and lie above Cumières on terroirs of Cumières, Damery and Hautvillers, with a southern exposure. The grape varieties are 50% Pinot Noir, 25% Chardonnay and 25% Pinot Meunier. The house practises sustainable viticulture (culture raisonnée), without chemical herbicides, with grass cover or ploughing, and harvests by hand.
The method is traditional: the grapes are pressed slowly in a traditional press, and the wine ages on bottle for about three years in limestone cellars. The house is distinguished by manual disgorgement (dégorgement à la volée) and the use of old methods. The champagnes are known for their deep colour and the characteristic terroir flavour of Cumières.
The main champagnes of the house are:
- Cuvée Louïs-Philippe: A prestigious blend of 100% Chardonnay.
- Brut Traditionnel: A refined and elegant basic champagne.
- Brut Rosé: A delicate rosé champagne.
- Demi-Sec: A sweeter version.
Visits are possible by appointment (in English and French), with tours averaging 75 to 90 minutes including a tasting of three champagnes. The house holds the Haute Valeur Environnementale and Vigneron Indépendant labels.
