Champagne Jonot Frères is an independent champagne house based in Thil, in the Massif de Saint-Thierry (Marne, France), led by the brothers Cyril and Fabien Jonot. Since 2020 they have been independent of the cooperative and produce champagnes that reflect the unique terroirs of their 5-hectare vineyard, based on a heritage of eight generations of winegrowers.
History and Independence The Jonot family built up the business as early as the 19th century, but worked for decades through cooperatives, including the founding of Christian Jonot & Fils in 2011. In 2020 the brothers opted for independence in order to better highlight their family heritage, which resulted in the launch of their own cuvées under the name Jonot Frères in 2023.
Vineyards and Terroir The vineyards cover 5 hectares and are spread over three communes:
- Saint-Thierry: Sandy-free soils that produce powerful and expressive Pinot Noir.
- Pouillon: A mixture of deep chalk, sand and loam, ideal for Meunier.
- Thil: Sandy soils with a high salt content, which ensures fine development of the Chardonnay.
Winemaking and Sustainability The estate practises sustainable viticulture with the HVE Level 3 certification (Haute Valeur Environnementale). Practices include natural ground cover, mechanical weed control, the elimination of insecticides and soil analyses for fertilisation. The champagnes are often evolved in oak barrels to maximise terroir expression.
Champagnes and Cuvées The range consists of six authentic cuvées, including:
- Rencontre: A blend of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Meunier, evolved in oak.
- Émulsion Rosé: A rosé with 7% Coteaux Rouge (Pinot Noir), which won the Prix des Jeunes Talents de Champagne.
- Mono-cépages: Three exclusive cuvées that each express one grape purely: Fraîcheur (100% Chardonnay), Souplesse (100% Meunier) and Structure (100% Pinot Noir).
- Coteaux Champenois: A rosé from old vineyards with long maceration and three years of oak ageing.
