History The estate in Verzenay originally dates from the 19th century, with cellars from 1820 and the first bottle of champagne from 1863. In 2012 the Labruyère family, originally from Burgundy, gave the historic property new life. The name J.M. Labruyère is a tribute to Jean-Marie Labruyère, the founder of the family branch in 1850. Edouard Labruyère runs the house and is the sixth generation of winegrowers in the family.
Vineyards and Terroir The estate owns about 6 hectares of its own vineyards in the Grand Cru villages of Verzenay and Verzy. The soil is calcareous-argillaceous, sheltered by the Montagne de Reims. The grape varieties are 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay. Verzenay is known for its exceptional Pinot Noir and is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Winemaking The family takes a Burgundian approach with an emphasis on sustainable farming. The estate is HVE3-certified (since 2017) and is working towards organic certification. The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully sorted. Each plot is pressed and vinified separately. The champagnes age for at least 3 years on the fine lees in vaulted cellars. Low dosage is applied to emphasise the terroir.
