Champagne Ernest Remy is an independent wine house based in Mailly-Champagne (address: 1 Rue Aristide Bouché, 51500), founded in 2008 by Alice and Tarek Berrada, both artists who rebuilt the family history. The origins go back to the 19th century with the houses Remy-Dubois and later Ernest Remy, but the current entity is the result of an unlikely story of heritage revival.
The vineyards cover 5 hectares and lie entirely in the Grand Cru areas of Mailly-Champagne and Verzenay in the Grande Montagne de Reims. The house specialises in Pinot Noir, the prevailing grape in this terroir, with a few plots of Chardonnay. Viticulture follows organic principles and the business is certified Haute Valeur Environnementale (HVE).
The method includes visiting the cuverie and the underground cellars hewn out of chalk, where the entire champagne production process is shown. Visitors can take part in tastings with three cuvées, such as Blanc de Noirs, Rosé de Saignée and Ratafia. Visiting hours are Monday to Friday from 14:00 to 17:00, and contact details are telephone 03 26 97 63 55 or e-mail [email protected].
The champagnes of Ernest Remy include:
- Brut Blanc de Noirs Grand Cru: An elegant, fresh wine.
- Demi-Sec Blanc de Noirs Grand Cru: A sweeter variant with harmony.
- Millésime Extra-brut Blanc de Noirs Grand Cru: A vintage wine with minimal sugar.
- Oxymore Extra-brut Grand Cru: An aristocratic, powerful cuvée.
- Rosé de Saignée Brut 100% Pinot Noir: Made by maceration.
- Ratafia: A traditional spirit based on champagne.
Some cuvées, such as the Millésime 2012 and Oxymore, received high ratings (e.g. 92/100 and 94/100 in guides). The house also offers direct sales to private customers and professionals, with delivery possible throughout France.
