Champagne Devaux, based in the 18th-century Manoir de Villeneuve in Bar-sur-Seine, was founded in 1846 by the brothers Jules and Auguste Devaux in Épernay. After the direct family line died out, the house was taken over in 1987 by the Union Auboise (now Groupe Vinicole Champagne Devaux), which moved the headquarters to the Côte des Bar. The brand name is historically intertwined with the three "Widows Devaux" who led the house to international success in the 19th century.
The vineyard holdings cover about 140 hectares in the Côte des Bar, dominated by Pinot Noir (105 ha) for structure and Chardonnay (35 ha) for elegance. The approach is characterised by sustainable viticulture, hand harvesting and a selection that uses only the first pressing ("cuvée" and "coeur de cuvée"). The house style emphasises long ageing: the standard line requires 3 years on the bottle, while the premium Collection D ages for at least 5 years.
The range consists of 11 cuvées, including:
- Les Classiques: base line with a minimum of 3 years of ageing.
- Collection D: premium line with a minimum of 5 years of ageing, including the Cuvée D, Ultra D and D Millésimé.
- Sténopé: a collaboration with Michel Chapoutier.
- Cœur des Bar: terroir-specific cuvées, such as the Blanc de Noirs (100% Pinot Noir).
- Still wines: including the Rosé des Riceys and Coteaux Champenois.
Production of around 700,000 bottles a year is exported for about 40% to 50 countries. The visitor site in Bar-sur-Seine offers wine-tourism tours and tastings in the historic manor.
