History: Champagne Deutz was founded in 1838 in Aÿ by the Prussian wine merchants William Deutz and Pierre-Hubert Geldermann. The house grew into an international reputation and was a co-founder of the Syndicat des Grandes Marques. In 1993 Deutz was taken over by the Rouzaud family (owners of Louis Roederer) after financial difficulties, but it largely kept its independent identity and style.
Vineyards and Terroir: The vines lie mainly in Aÿ and surrounding villages, with an average rating of 97% on the échelle des crus. The house owns roughly 40-45 hectares of its own vineyards (mainly Grand Cru and Premier Cru) and buys in grapes from reliable suppliers to ensure a production of about 2 million bottles a year. The soil is chalky (chalk, marl, limestone), which contributes to the freshness and finesse of the wines.
Method: Deutz uses the traditional method with an emphasis on balance, finesse and consistency. Reserve wines (20-40%) are used extensively to guarantee the house style in every year. Ageing takes place in 3-kilometre-long chalk cellars at a depth of 20-60 metres. The house has recently converted to organic farming and aims to limit yields for higher quality. The style combines the structure of Pinot Noir with the elegance of Chardonnay.
Champagnes: The core collection includes:
- Brut Classic: The non-vintage flagship, a blend of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay.
- Blanc de Blancs: Exclusively Chardonnay, known for its pure and mineral character.
- Amour de Deutz: The prestige cuvée, available as Blanc de Blancs and Rosé, with long ageing.
- Cuvée William Deutz: An exclusive vintage cuvée, named after the founder, with dominant Pinot Noir.
- Brut Rosé: A popular rosé that combines the finesse of Pinot Noir from Aÿ with Chardonnay.
