Champagne de Barfontarc is the brand of the Coopérative de la Région de Baroville in Baroville, in the Côte des Bar. The cooperative was founded on 17 February 1962 by some fifty growers from Baroville, Fontaine and Arconville to share pressing; the brand name is made up of the first syllables of those three villages.
History The brand was born in 1971 and the first tirage of 30,000 bottles followed in 1972/73. Since 2000 the cooperative has made its own champagnes for its brand. In 2022 it had 54 members, 127 hectares and 19 employees, and sold 240,000 bottles in more than 15 countries. Olivier Martin is managing director and Denis Tardieu cellar master.
Vineyards The 54 grower families farm around 130 hectares in eight villages around Baroville, on marl and clay-limestone soils where Pinot Noir dominates. The cooperative is committed to HVE certification; 80% of the vineyard holds the Viticulture Durable en Champagne label.
Approach The varied supply of grapes allows many blending options. All Essentielles and the vintage Signatures receive extended ageing.
