Champagne‌ B. Hennequin is a traditional family business in Venteuil (Vallée de la Marne), located at 51, route d'Arty, Les Almanachs, 51480 VENTEUIL. The family has been connected with the vineyards in this municipality for centuries.

History

The Hennequin family is one of the oldest winegrowing families of Venteuil, with roots going back to 1645 (Nicolas Hennequin). Although other branches of the family switched to champagne earlier, B. Hennequin is a small, passion-driven operation that upholds the tradition with four generations. Benoît, Joëlle and their daughter Pauline currently run the day-to-day business.

Vineyards

The vineyard covers 2.4 to 2.5 hectares on steep, south-facing slopes in the Vallée de la Marne, about 10 km from Épernay. The soil is clay-limestone (argilo-kalkachtig). The grape varieties are:

Pinot Noir
Chardonnay
Pinot Meunier

The grapes are harvested by hand and come from the municipalities around Venteuil (including Arty).

Approach

The house is known for its refusal of mass production and of modernity at the expense of tradition:

Manual remuage: The bottles are still riddled by hand on wooden pupitres; no automatic riddling machines are used.
Traditional pressing: A wooden press is used, renovated but still in use as it was centuries ago.
No filtration: All champagnes are unfiltered to preserve the pure taste.
Production: Between 16,000 and 18,000 bottles are produced annually.
Full control: From blending and bottling to ageing, disgorging and sales, everything takes place on the estate.

Champagnes and Visits

The champagnes are classified as Récoltant-Manipulant (R.M.) with the AOC Champagne. In addition to champagne, the house also offers Ratafia, Fine and Marc de Champagne.

Visitors can take a tour of the traditional facilities (press, wine cellar, pupitres) and taste by appointment. This is possible for individuals and small groups (maximum 12-15 people).
