Mont-Saint-Père lies in the Aisne department, on the Marne, a few kilometres east of Château-Thierry, in the western part of the Vallée de la Marne. The village has no cru classification.
The south of the Aisne falls within the Champagne appellation. The vineyards here lie on the slopes along the Marne, such as the coteau de Chartèves above the village. In this western part of the valley meunier is the dominant grape, planted on clay- and marl-bearing soils. As a result, the champagnes are generally fruity, round and approachable.
The area around Château-Thierry is less visited than the heart of Champagne, so visitors often have direct contact with the growers. In Mont-Saint-Père, Alain Bergère, among others, makes champagne.
