Mareuil-sur-Aÿ lies in the Grande Vallée de la Marne, just east of Aÿ, on the edge of the Montagne de Reims (Marne department). The village has Premier Cru status.
- Vineyards: steep south-facing slopes with a chalk subsoil. Pinot Noir dominates.
- Character: powerful, ripe and vinous champagnes with a firm structure.
- Producers: Philipponnat is based here and makes the famous Clos des Goisses, a very steep vineyard along the Marne canal. Billecart-Salmon also has its home here. R. Pouillon, Guy Charbaut and L. Bénard-Pitois, among others, are also active.
The village lies on the Canal latéral à la Marne and, together with Aÿ, forms one of the core areas for Pinot Noir in the valley.
