History: The Philipponnat family has been present in Champagne since 1522, but the house was officially founded in 1913 by Auguste and Pierre Philipponnat. Since 2000 the company has been run by Charles Philipponnat and is part of the Lanson-BCC group.
Vineyards: The house owns 20 hectares of vineyards (some sources say 17 ha) in Grand Cru and Premier Cru areas, spread over Aÿ, Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, Avenay-Val-d'Or and Mutigny. The grape varieties are dominated by Pinot Noir (about 70%), complemented by Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier.
Approach: Philipponnat is known for its reserve wines in wood (solera principle) and the use of only the first pressing (cuvée). The wine is kept 3 to 11 years on the lees, with limited malolactic fermentation to preserve freshness. The house follows sustainability standards such as HVE level 3 and Viticulture Durable.
Champagnes: The iconic cuvée is the Clos des Goisses, a mono-cru of 5.5 hectares with a steep slope, available as standard and rosé. The Cuvée 1522 is a prestigious blend of Grands Crus, mainly Pinot Noir. The Royale Réserve Brut is the base vintage, with the base year explicitly stated on the label.
