Champagne Trouillard is one of the oldest champagne houses, founded in 1896 by Lucien Trouillard in Hautvillers, only 5 km from Épernay. The house is known for its traditional working methods combined with innovative methods, and has a rich history that goes back to the production of the first champagne bubbles in the region by Dom Pérignon.
History and Family
- Foundation: Lucien Trouillard began in 1896 with the production of 1,500 bottles; he later bought a distribution company (la Sparnacienne Viticole) in order to produce 50,000 bottles per year.
- Growth: In the 1970s the house reached a size of 3 million bottles per year, which at the time made it the 10th largest by volume.
- Cooperation: Since 2006 Trouillard has worked together with the Gobillard family in Hautvillers, where the head office is located.
- Location: Although the house is often associated with Épernay because of its proximity and the Avenue de Champagne, the core activity is based in Hautvillers and the chais are located in Dizy.
Vineyards and Terroir
- Area: The estate manages approximately 30 hectares of owned land.
- Grape varieties: The vineyards are planted evenly with the three classic champagne grapes: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.
- Location: The plots lie in Hautvillers and surrounding areas, an area that has had UNESCO World Heritage status since 2015 because of the landscape and the winemaking tradition.
- Approach: Trouillard respects the natural environment and maintains a carefully managed, authentic vineyard.
Champagnes and Collection
The house produces a refined range that is appreciated by experts and amateurs worldwide. Some well-known variants are:
- Blanc de Blancs: Made from 100% Chardonnay, often awarded high scores (e.g. 87/100).
- Elexium Rosé: A rosé champagne with a balance of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.
- La Cuvée Brut Extra Sélection Hautvilliers: A representative brut champagne from the region.
- Blanc de Noirs: A white champagne made from red grapes (Pinot Noir/Meunier).
The champagnes are available in various price classes (often €25-€45) and are exported to many countries, with an emphasis on finesse, elegance and family traditions.
