Champagne Tarlant is a family business in Œuilly (Vallée de la Marne), founded in 1687 and now led by the twelfth generation, including Benoît Tarlant and Mélanie Tarlant. The house is known for its Brut Nature (non-dosed) champagnes, high quality and transparency.
History
- The family has grown vineyards in the region since 1687; in 1780 Louis Tarlant settled in Œuilly.
- Louis Adrien Tarlant created the first cuvée in 1929 (Carte Blanche).
- In the 1970s the house became a pioneer in non-dosé (zero dosage) champagnes, in which no sugar is added after disgorgement.
- Benoît and Mélanie have run the house since the 1990s, and have also had an online presence since 1999.
Vineyards
- The estate has approximately 14-15 hectares of vineyard, divided over 55-60 plots.
- The soils are diverse: limestone, Sparnacian (clay-limestone), sand and chalk, rich in fossils.
- A specific plot (Les Sables) survived phylloxera thanks to its sandy soil.
- The grape varieties are Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, plus less common varieties such as Arbane, Petit Meslier and Pinot Blanc.
- The viticulture follows principles of organic and biodynamic farming (not certified), without chemical herbicides or insecticides.
Working Methods
- Vinification is parcellaire, with each vineyard parcel processed separately.
- The first fermentation often takes place in oak barrels (barriques), which contributes to the mature characteristics.
- Indigenous yeast is used for authentic terroir expression.
- The champagnes undergo a long ageing on the lees, which contributes to complexity.
- The house produces approximately 100,000-150,000 bottles per year, with a complete focus on Brut Nature or Zero Dosage.
Champagnes and Cuvées
- Champagne Zéro Brut Nature: The core of the range, completely non-dosed for pure fruit and terroir expression.
- Cuvée BAM: A unique blend of the four old Champagne varieties: Pinot Blanc, Arbane, Petit Meslier and Pinot Noir.
- Réserve Brut: A non-vintage blend (NV) of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, with fermentation in stainless steel and ageing in oak barrels.
- Le Triumvirat and La Lutetienne: Specific cuvées (such as rosé) that show the diversity of the portfolio.
